On Aug. 24, 1869, Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York, received his patent for the waffle iron. While waffles existed long before then, the invention made waffles more readily available.
On Aug. 24, 2023, Community Hospital of Huntington Park paid tribute to Swarthout – and celebrated their employees – with International Waffle Day.
Staff finishing up the night shift and others arriving for the day shift enjoyed a sweet breakfast in the hospital cafeteria along with hospital camaraderie.
